CHITRAKONDA NATURE CAMP » AT A GLANCE

Chitrakonda in Malkangiri district is a land of tribals and is gifted by the natural bounty. It is popular for Balimela dam completed during 1972 with the length of its reservoir about 65kms. Chitrakonda is around 70 Kms away from district headquarter i.e. Malkangiri.

At the base of the wall of Chitrakonda dam, Chitrakonda Eco-Park was formed near Temporary Colony, Chitrakonda by the side of Balimela-Chitrakonda State High way (now NH) in the downstream of Balimela Reservoir. The eco-park came into being by the initiation and efforts of the Members of Maa Bhandaragharani VSS of Operate Colony, and Staffs of Chitrakonda Forest Range, Malkangiri Division. As per the decision taken at general body Meeting of Maa Bhandaragharani VSS held on 14.4.2014, an Action Plan under IAP Scheme was submitted to the Collector, Malkangiri with an estimated outlay of Rs.138.00 lakh who approved and sanctioned the project under IAP (SCA). The eco-park is now a very popular one-day destination among the people. Eco-park is visited by visitors from Malkangiri and Andhra Pradesh. This park gives an entirely different picture and perspective of Malkangiri, changing its image as “Maoist affected region”.
